pacifica!
it's a beautiful day! i'm in a cafe in pacifica. i'm looking at the ocean. i have a water, a coffee, and an odwalla. sawyer is getting shot full of medicine down the street. most of the people in this cafe are overweight and drinking out of disposable cups and eating egg, ham, and cheese croissant-wiches. happy friday! happy royal wedding aka happy crazy hat day!

good morning?

i just had a dream about partying with gwynne! she was sitting on the floor in the middle of a room with an unreasonably large bottle of vodka. she may or may not have been crying and/or sleeping. it was awesome and i was sad when i woke up.
this blog comes to you from the floor! wiley took apart our bed frame. it's ok, he did it because we are moving! this weekend! i packed some books. i also emptied our spice rack into 2 shoe boxes. then i got tired of packing and had to drink a few beers.
saw tUnEyArDs on TuEsDaY, it was fab. ate pizza at delfina last night, it was fab. sidenote: if you aren't watching the real world las vegas, you are missing out! wiley, ben and i had some deep conversations last night! what is love? also, what is natto?
today is thursday. make it count, people!

Earth Day Challenge
Friends! Today is Earth Day! Here are some facts:
-According to the United Nations, raising animals for food now uses a staggering 30 percent of the Earth's land mass.
-More than 70 percent of the grain and cereals that we grow in this country are fed to farmed animals.
-It takes more than 11 times as much fossil fuel to make one calorie from animal protein as it does to make one calorie from plant protein.
-With the water used to produce a single hamburger, you could take a luxurious shower every day for two and a half weeks.
-The EPA reports that chicken, hog, and cattle excrement has polluted 35,000 miles of rivers in 22 states and contaminated groundwater in 17 states.
-When the cesspools holding tons of urine and feces get full, factory farms frequently dodge water pollution limits by spraying liquid manure into the air, creating mists that are carried away by the wind.
Friends! I challenge you to go meat-free for one week in honor of the Earth! Try it! It's not hard, I promise. You might even feel better and will most likely have more energy! If you're really brave, be vegan for a week! I dare you! Here are some meal ideas to get you started. What do you have to lose?
Love,
Annie

thing 1 and thing 2
i made two great new things this weekend that i want to share.
thing #1: pasta with creamy potato alfredo sauce
we only had two little potatoes kicking around and i wanted to make something different. i used this recipe as a jumping off point, but was missing a lot of the ingredients.
here's what i did.
-chopped the potatoes and boiled them
-when they were done, i sauteed some garlic in a good amount of Earth Balance
-while the garlic cooked, i mixed 1 tbsp cornstarch in a little water
-after a few minutes, i added the potatoes, 1 cup of hemp milk, a dash of soy sauce & the cornstarch. also some nutritional yeast. duh.
-threw it all in the blender
-threw it on top of some pasta
-threw it in my mouth
-threw up (because it was so good, dummy)
it needed salt, probably would have been better if i had a bouillon cube. still good though and really creamy!
thing #2: orange cranberry muffins
last spring before wiley and i moved to cape may, i bought a bunch of dried cranberries and cherries. these traveled with us from annapolis to NJ and back again, then accompanied us across the country to ultimately find a home in a jar on our kitchen counter here in SF. it is with great sadness that i tell you our friends will soon be no longer with us, as last night i heartlessly baked them into a batch of Really Delicious Muffins.
i basically followed this recipe, with a few alterations. i didn't have any canola oil, so i used a make-em-up combination of olive oil, water, and cranberry juice. i also don't have almond extract. if you must know, i used the juice and zest of local oranges that i got at the FREE farm stand yesterday.

morning riddle
i saw something curious when i was walking sawyer this morning: two grown men carrying little pink helmets and scooters. there were no kids to be seen. what the deal? this is a morning riddle!
i also saw men in hard hats at a construction site listening to the village people. that was less of a riddle, more just a funny thing i saw.
